These incentives vary from city to city and from town to town; I'm sure some cities may offer an educational package. Many dangerous jobs offer incentives to prospective applicants, from educational packages, to higher salaries, to health benefits, to pension plans; the list goes on and on. Police officers in many areas are quite well paid and have good benefits. You want to attract and keep good people in these jobs and that requires incentives. In that regard, the military is no different. A firefighter places him/herself at risk for grave injury every time the alarm goes off. Does that mean that they should simply stand around and watch a building as it burns? After all it isn't <I>their</I> property. And some neighborhoods are very dangerous. Should the police retreat from those areas so as to avoid injury or death?
